Google is rolling out a new feature for its Gemini AI assistant in Google Drive that lets it analyze video files and extract key insights without requiring you to watch them in full. Starting this week, Gemini’s capabilities inside Google Drive will expand beyond documents and PDFs, letting you prompt it to generate video summaries, extract action items, and answer specific questions about video content without playing the file.
“Videos contain a wealth of information, however going back to watch them can be time consuming,” Google wrote in its Workspace Updates blog. “With this update, users can leverage Gemini to get what they need from their videos much faster.”
Gemini’s video analysis relies on auto-generated captions from videos stored in Google Drive. You can engage with Gemini by clicking the “Ask Gemini” star icon while previewing a video. The feature works from both the in-app overlay previewer and a separate file viewer that opens in a new browser tab.
Who gets it and when
Gemini’s new feature is being gradually rolled out in stages, with rapid release domains starting May 28 with full rollout beginning June 16 to users with the following plans:
- Google Workspace Business Standard and Plus
- Google Workspace Enterprise Standard and Plus
- Gemini Education and Gemini Education Premium add-ons
- Google One AI Premium
- Previous purchasers of Gemini Business or Enterprise add-ons
At launch, this video feature is only available in English, and relies on Google’s auto-generated captions to interpret audio content. Captions are enabled by default for videos stored in Drive, although administrators of managed Workspace accounts may have customized caption settings.
In addition to AI-driven video summaries, Google is also introducing new video engagement analytics. The Details panel for each video now displays the number of items it has been opened. This provides a simple but helpful way to track user interest and file activity.
Separately, at the recently concluded Google I/O event in California, Google announced a major upgrade for developers: the integration of Gemini 2.5 Pro AI into Android Studio. The update enables developers to harness Gemini for agentic AI tasks, including tracking user journeys across both physical Android devices and virtual test environments.
