In what officials are calling “the largest capital investment in Commonwealth history,” Amazon has announced plans to invest at least $20 billion in Pennsylvania to expand its data center infrastructure and advance artificial intelligence innovation.
This expansion will establish multiple innovation campuses across Pennsylvania, beginning with Salem Township in Luzerne County and Falls Township in Bucks County.
“Pennsylvania is competing again—and I’m proud to announce that with Amazon’s commitment of at least $20 billion to build new state-of-the-art data center campuses across our Commonwealth, we have secured the largest private sector investment in the history of Pennsylvania,” said Governor Josh Shapiro in a statement.
He continued: “This initial investment from Amazon will create thousands of good-paying, stable jobs as Pennsylvania workers build, maintain, and operate the first two data center campuses.”
The announcement came just days after Amazon disclosed plans to spend $10 billion in North Carolina and more than $5 billion in Taiwan for similar cloud infrastructure projects.
New jobs and economic growth
The Pennsylvania project is expected to create at least 1,250 new high-skilled jobs, including roles such as data center engineers, network specialists, and security experts. The ripple effect could support thousands of additional jobs in construction and the AWS data center supply chain.
“Amazon’s multi-billion-dollar investment in Pennsylvania reinforces our dedication to advancing AI innovation while creating lasting economic opportunities in the state,” said David Zapolsky, Amazon’s chief global affairs and legal officer.
The company emphasized that these jobs will be high-paying, long-term positions that boost the state’s growing technology workforce.
Giving back to the community
Beyond infrastructure, Amazon’s investment also focuses heavily on education, skills training, and community support.
The company launched the Amazon Northeastern Pennsylvania Community Fund, with an initial investment of $250,000 in grants of up to $10,000 each. The fund, administered by the nonprofit ChangeX, will support local projects focused on STEM, sustainability, digital skills, culture, health, and other areas.
The Pennsylvania expansion serves dual purposes: strengthening local communities while advancing America’s tech capabilities.
“Our strategic investments in advanced computing infrastructure and specialized AI hardware are building the technology backbone for the next generation of generative and agentic AI,” Amazon stated in its official release, noting these efforts help “secure America’s position at the forefront of global innovation.”
Millions of startups, enterprises, and government agencies rely on AWS to drive innovation, the company said. This Pennsylvania expansion is a crucial part of that puzzle.
